A Time for Lunch and Learning

Dietitian Carol Bliznik touted the benefits of "Berrylicious Nutrition’’ during a Lunch and Learn session for Saint Anthony Medical Center staff members June 30.

The program highlighted the health benefits of the summer berries – strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries – and displayed several completed recipes using them. July is National Blueberry Month. "These berries are wonderful treats and very versatile in a number of recipes,’’ Carol told the group.

STEMI Task Force marks accomplishment

The Saint Anthony Medical Center STEMI Task Force is celebrating eight consecutive months of having a 100 percent compliance rate with a national standard for having a door-to-PCI time of 90 minutes or less.

Members of the Emergency Department, Cath Lab and shift directors received polo shirts and warm-up jackets from the team to note the accomplishment.

SAMC honors volunteers for service

Saint Anthony Medical Center President David Ruskowski paid tribute to the hospital auxiliary’s 242 volunteers during a 37th annual appreciation luncheon recently.

Volunteers were congratulated for service hours ranging from 100 to 26,000 and for working 10 or more consecutive years.

Besides the luncheon and tributes, auxiliary members enjoyed entertainment and prizes. Among his remarks, Ruskowski told the group, “Thank you for donating your precious time to help others.’’
Honorary awards for those who have worked 10 or more consecutive years were presented to Mary Bixenman and Patricia Maka.

Volunteers who have donated 100 to 26,000 hours include:

Community Foundation Boosts Capital Campaign

Saint Anthony Medical Center President David Ruskowski, left, accepts a $1,000 check donated to the hospital’s Capital Campaign by the Crown Point Community Foundation as part of its 20-year anniversary celebration. The foundation is presenting that amount to various nonprofit organizations. Presenting the check is Joseph Allegretti, foundation board member emeritus, who also chairs the Capital Campaign. Shown next to Allegretti are Pat Huber, foundation president, and Rob Cummings, regional director of philanthropy for Sisters of St. Francis Health Services Northern Indiana Region. They are shown outside of the newly opened complex at 1121 S. Indiana Ave., Crown Point, that houses the St. Clare Health Clinic and the Prenatal Assistance Program. Funds for the construction were provided by the Capital Campaign, which also plans to help finance a planned new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Saint Anthony.
