JOIN US on July 28 for the Franciscanfit Mallwalkers program

“Taking Care of You … Mind, Body and Spirit’’ is the theme of the next
Franciscanfit -- Steps to Good Health monthly Mallwalkers program.

The program, sponsored by Sisters of St. Francis Health Services Northern Indiana Region and Westfield Southlake Mall, is scheduled for 8 to 10 a.m. July 28.

The public is invited to attend a 9 a.m. presentation of the program theme offered by Michael Kopec, program director of Parisi Speed School Powered by Omni 41 Health and Fitness Connection in Schererville. He has been a teacher and coach for more than 10 years. He teaches the power of recognizing self-worth -- mental programming and habits and physical tendencies -- to help create fulfillment of mind, body and spirit.

Body fat analysis screenings also will be offered.

The free program, which kicked off in January, offers charter memberships in the new club, formed in conjunction with the Westfield Walkers.

New Mallwalkers members are welcome to register for the program, which takes place on the mall’s lower level, outside of JC Penney, on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Regular walkers hours are 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 9 to 11 a.m. Sundays. For more information, call (1-800) 931-3322.

Saint Anthony - Demotte Clinic Blessing Marks Opening

July 7 brought yet another addition to the growing Saint Anthony family of health services. A blessing and dedication ceremony that day marked the much-anticipated opening of the new Saint Anthony-DeMotte Clinic.

President David Ruskowski led off the DeMotte celebration by thanking supporters, who included community leaders and business owners.

Joining him for a ribbon-cutting ceremony were Sister Jane Marie Klein, OSF, chairperson of the Sisters of St. Francis Health Services, along with DeMotte Town Council President Mark Boer, Town Manager John Dyke and Office Manager Heather Tokarz. The clinic’s physicians, Lisa Mullally, DO, Timothy Mullally, DO, and their new partner, Ugochi Genevieve Okoro, MD, also participated in the ceremony.

Deacon James Etter followed by blessing with Holy Water each room in the new building.

The approximately 80 attendees enjoyed food, refreshments and tours.

The clinic, located at 200 3rd Court SE, opened to the public on June 28. It replaces a former storefront clinic location at 417 N. Halleck St. that had operated since 1988.

The clinic features Franciscan Physician Network, radiology and laboratory services. Also planned is the addition of obstetrics/gynecological services that will be offered by Stephanos Rizos, MD.

For more information, call the clinic at (219) 987-2641.

A Word from Our President - Summer 2010

I am proud to say that our new St. Clare Health Clinic, which has been years in the making, opened its doors in May to continue the service it has offered since 1996 – assisting underprivileged area residents.

The full story appears inside our In-Touch Magazine, but let me present some highlights.
The new complex, built on the site of the former Crown Point Clinic at 21121 S. Indiana Ave., also is home to our Prenatal Assistance Program, which also serves the less fortunate in our area. That program began in 2002.

Since their inception, both programs have aided thousands of Northwest Indiana residents, who otherwise may not have found help.

Now, those services only will improve, with a spacious, state-of-the-art facility that will accommodate the mostly volunteer staffs – including doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and others – who give of their time and talents.

The economic woes of the last couple of years have led more people to seek our services. Some are reluctant. They may be out-of-work professionals or skilled workers who never had been without insurance and hesitate to request assistance – proud people. But, I’m happy to report those who do ask do not regret it.

In some cases, it is a matter of keeping them on medications or providing treatment they otherwise could not afford for chronic illnesses.
Others benefit from the food pantry, through patient education services, health screenings and physical exams.

The Prenatal Program provides expectant mothers assistance in obtaining community and hospital resources. They also know they are not alone, since the staff provides regular and supportive contact during the pregnancy. There even is baby clothing available.

What’s more, Saint Anthony’s service offerings for newborns and their families will be boosted this fall by the opening of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which will mean better care for premature or ill newborns and less stress for their families. The unit, which will be staffed by neonatalogists and specially trained nurses, will reduce the number of cases requiring transfer to other hospitals.

Families no longer need endure the separation trauma a transfer can bring.
Helping those who are in difficulty, be it medical, personal, spiritual or financial, is our mission. One of the Franciscan Values, by which we abide, is Compassionate Concern, along with Fidelity to Mission, Respect for Life, Christian Stewardship and Joyful Service.

We forever will hold true to those values, putting the best interests of our patients and the community above all else.
